PORTAJE EMBALSE - CANCHOS DE RAMIRO

The Portaje reservoir, in the Alagón Valley region, is a small artificial wetland of high ornithological importance, which currently holds the record of being the locality of Extremadura where the greatest number of bird species have been recorded over the years . Among its outstanding values is a breeding colony formed by several species of herons, as well as a rich community of birds linked to aquatic environments, such as the waterfowl and waders, especially during migratory and winter months. The adjacent dehesas, harbor a good representation of Mediterranean birds, as well as several species of raptors of interest, such as the blue-winged or the short-toed European. The route is complemented with a visit to the Canchos de Ramiro, a spectacular fluvial cut classified as ZEPA (Special Projection Zone for Birds) located at the confluence of the Arrago and Alagón rivers. This unique place is the habitat of some of the most representative species of the region, such as the griffon vulture, the black vulture, the Egyptian vulture or the black stork, or others such as the golden eagle and Bonelli's eagle.
