ORCHIDS

Orchids are an extremely diverse botanical family. From the evolutionary point of view it is a very young family, and yet one of the most numerous, comprising between 20,000 and 30,000 species worldwide, most of them located in tropical and subtropical climates. Its striking and convoluted designs, as well as its different adaptive mechanisms, have fascinated botanists and amateurs, who today continue to deepen their knowledge of this complex and attractive family. In the Iberian Peninsula there are 25 genera and 90 species, of which 44 species of 13 genera are present in Extremadura, including some species and endemic varieties of the region. The taxonomy used corresponds to the one used in the project orquideasibericas.info.

Two alternative routes are offered. The first one takes us to the town of Almaraz, where we will make a small march through the mountain of Sierro, a limestone outcrop that houses a rich community of orchids formed by up to 17 species, whose sequenced flowering ranges from late February to mid of May. There we will visit some of the plots with the greatest diversity of species, discovering some of their curiosities and evolutionary adaptations. The second option covers the surroundings of Plasencia and some locations in the Ambroz Valley, such as Hervás or La Garganta, where some of the rarest and most threatened species in the region are present, although in smaller numbers, such as the Neottia nidus-avis. or the Cephalanthera rubra, among others.
